Existential Therapy and Technique
Existential therapy is a philosophical approach to dealing with clients who have psychological problems.Consequently, there are not set techniques used by existential therapists, instead, they focus on understanding the "deep: underlying human experiences that lead to the problem (ultimate VS immediate) concerns.
Existentialist suggests that there are 6 basic aspects (propositions) of humans:
Capacity for Self-awareness
It is suggesting that by having clients broaden their level of self-awareness, and that it automatically leads to personal growth. Consequently, this is usually one of the goals in existential therapy.
Freedom and Responsibility
People have the freedom to create their own destiny and are responsible for that destiny which they create. By having clients realize this principle, clients are empowered to change to change the condition which currently afflicts them, and stop being a victim.
Creating One's Identity and Establishing Meaningful Relationships with Others
Striving for identity and relationship to others - existential therapist points out to the client that they are ultimately alone. But, they suggest that clients use this information to realize that they alone must choose how they want to live their lives, and will be responsible for it. Additionally, it is suggested that in other to have a healthy relationship with someone else (which is important) the client must first develop a healthy relationship with themselves.
The Search for Meaning, Purpose, Values, and Goals
The search for meaning is a basic human condition. It is suggested that people can only find meaning and purpose in life by living and confronting challenges in their lives. Therefore, it is the therapist job to help clients to realize this.
Anxiety as a Condition of Living
Clients should distinguish between normal anxiety (which is good for us) and neurotic anxiety (which is out of proportion). Inasmuch there is uncertainty in life, people will always experience anxiety, and should use that to propel them to change.
Awareness of Death and Nonbeing
This should lead us to do the things we value in life, and help us realize how precious life is.
Existential therapy is considered a philosophy which should be integrated into other perspectives, this therapy is seen as most beneficial when dealing with clients who are struggling with developmental life issues, as opposed to those with serious mental disorders.
