Emotional Freedom Technique: Helpful Information and Working

Gary Craig, who studied TFT under Dr. Callahan, created this technique. Emotional Freedom Technique involves a single tapping procedure that is simple and easy to learn. The process, which is relaxing and energizing for the client, releases negative emotional energy stored in the nervous system after and emotionally disturbing event.

Emotional Freedom Techniques - introduction

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is about returning the mind, body and feelings to a state of balance and harmony so you are not limited by negative emotions.

Even though we are 'designed' to recover from unpleasant experiences or thought patterns, nevertheless we can be affected by recurring emotions from past events such as relationships, trauma or loss. We can also be affected by ongoing or future events such as work-related stress, interpersonal problems, depression and various kinds of anxieties.

In these examples, emotions can be stuck rather than dispersed. Even if we try to ignore them, they still affect our lives. If people decide to do something about the negative feelings or patterns they may try counselling, see their doctor, or compensate for their feelings in some way. Every approach has its merits, but many people will not have heard of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) as an option for resolving their problem.

How EFT works

EFT is a very effective yet gentle method of directly balancing the body's energy system for the feelings that you want to change. It's a bit like clearing a log that's blocking a stream where the log represents a stuck emotion in your stream of energy. You don't have to believe in the theory though, just as you don't need to know how a car works under the bonnet to drive one. Some people do like to find out more about the theory, while others are happy simply to have their problem resolved.

EFT is very easy to learn, and will help you:

  • Remove Negative Emotions
  • Reduce Food Cravings
  • Reduce or Eliminate Pain
  • Implement Positive Goals

Why you may not have heard of eft before

The use of this technique is relatively new and may be a part of the beginning of a complete revolution in the way we handle our emotions. In many cases, difficulties that have persisted in spite of years of work using the methods of traditional psychology may be relieved in minutes. If not relief is generally possible within days or weeks rather than years. Gary Craig, whose academic training includes a Stanford Engineering Degree, developed EFT earlier in the 1990's. While personal healing has been his passion for over 30 years, Gary is neither a licensed therapist nor a trained psychologist. Many of the concepts underlying EFT came from Gary's training in Thought Field Therapy (TFT) under the tutorship of Dr. Roger Callahan. TFT involves the use of 10 or 15 individualized tapping routines. EFT differs in that it employs only one comprehensive tapping routine, which is used for all emotional and physical problems. Because of this, it is easy enough to be mastered by most people.

Some frequently asked questions about eft

How long do the results last?

EFT is generally long lasting. Physical healings are often impressive and long lasting as well, but are more likely to re-emerge than emotional issues.

Are EFT's results due to either placebo effects or distraction?

No. Placebo effects require some belief in the process and this is rarely the case for newcomers to EFT. Also, although EFT may appear to be distracting, it will not work if the client is, in fact, distracted. That is why the client continually repeats a phrase which "tunes in" to the problem.

Are there any negative side effects?

By comparison to almost any other process, EFT is quite gentle and rarely has any side effects. It is often used instead of other procedures, because of its gentle nature.

How does EFT use kinesiology?

Kinesiology (muscle testing) is used to determine negative belief systems one holds (sometimes unconsciously), which is called "psychological reversal."

How can I learn EFT myself?

Phillip and Jane Mountrose have written a book on the subject, along with demonstration videos and audios that guide you through the deeper techniques. You can purchase all of these materials at this website. To find out more about EFT book and tapes
