Adlerian Therapy: Family and Play Therapy

Adler suggested that therapists should attempt to understand their clients based on their subject reality; and not an objective one. Trying to view from the clients' shoes. Consequently, this concept developed into what we call today a phenomenological approach. Later, this theory become the bedrock of existential person-centered, and reality therapy. Additionally, principles have been used in marriage counseling, parent education, and family counseling.

Adlerian Therapy: Therapeutic Goals

The central goal of adlerian therapy is to help clients identify and change their mistaken beliefs / assumptions / goals about self, other, and life and thus participate more fully in a social world. To reach these goals the use several techniques including: 1- Establish a Relationship This is not something that is just encouraged it is viewed as a technique to help clients. Adlerians attempt to help clients by first developing a bond with them, then addressing the problem. 2- Subjective (personal stories - looking for patterns) and objective interviews (life assessment) focus on : a)how problems begin b) precipitating events c) medical history d) social history e) reason for seeking help currently f) methods of coping g) lifestyle assessment. Family constellations are also important in this stage. 3- Self understanding is the aspect of Adlerian psychology that deals with unconscious motives and attempts to make these motives conscious. 4- Finally it is suggested that clients should reeducate themselves in a more functional way and become productive citizens in society. Clients are encouraged to change goals and "act as if they were the people they want to be."

Adlerian Family Therapy

Adlerian Brief Therapy with Families is greatly enhanced in an open-forum setting where multiple families participate in the encouragement of a family-in-focus--and conversely, the family-in-focus educates others. While this process reduces the possibility of guaranteeing confidentiality, it increases the accountability of the therapist and the counseling process.

In the outline of the process, presented below, there is an emphasis on interaction within the system (as opposed to intra-psychic experiences). Little is disclosed in these sessions, therefore, that could not be observed by anyone watching the family in a public place. Adlerian Play Therapy

Adlerian psychotherapy of counseling is derived from the individual psychology of Alfred Adler who was one of the early disciples of Freud. Unlike Freud, Alder attributed less importance to infantile sexual development as it related to the psychogenesis of neuroses and placed more importance to the child's experiences with power and the lack of it. Later therapists have discovered that a greater success rate with children exists through the use

Adlerian Play Therapy

Although Adlerian Play Therapy may work a little different because it is geared to appeal to children, the concept is the same. In Adlerian Therapy sessions, the therapist will focus on and examine the lifestyle of the client and try to form a mutual respect and trust with the client. They will then mutually set goals as the therapist provides encouragement and makes suggestions on how the client can reach those goals. The therapist will also provide the encouragement for the client to make the changes that will assist him or her in attaining the goals that have been set.
